The impact of new digital media

Go to our Media Magazine archive and read the article on Netflix and the Cultural Industries(MM63 - page 45). Create a blogpost called 'The impact of new/digital media on TV' and answer the following questions:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

The industry concept refers to companies that create and distribute media texts.


2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

he argues that there is been a shift cultural production as he thinks that technology now has started to compete directly with traditional media.In addition he thinks cultural industries have moved closer to the centre of economic action

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

2.)Increase in media corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry.

4) What is technological convergence? 

Technology convergence means digistilation od media which means that every media form can be be easily accessed by computers.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

they are challenging traditional tv industry as they are making it easy for the public to watch things online in their website or app than be watching in television as they have given the control to the customer  to watch the show/film anywhere on their phone or tablet.in addition this has been done by Amazon and Netflix throughout the years they have grown a lot as Netflix was a dvd company and now has created its online service which has helped It be a big company.

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year according to the article?

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

Netflix is available in 130 countries.

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

global means that the network has the license to be broadcasted anywhere in the world.


9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?

In my opinion these big companies will start to show their interest in these television companies because these television companies have a lot of profit as it is being binge watched by the people and people have an interest in watching things online.


10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?

The changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas as capital  as these shows are on dominant on computers and phone which allows audience to binge watch the whole series.
