Research and planning Print

Research and planning blog tasks

Create a blogpost called 'Print brief research and planning' and complete the following tasks to plan and prepare your print work:

1) Research magazine cover key conventions. Look over the magazine cover key conventions notes sheet and write which of these you will use for your magazine cover.

magazine key conventions

  • title of publication -placed in the top and magazine logo
  • central image -single strong image showing the main focus of the magazine
  • slogan - a catchy phrase/statement
  • colour scheme-colours show the vibe of a magazine.
  • cover line-text to advertise their magazine.
  • free offer-promotion of attract customers
  • competitions-questionnaires and quizes to draw readers.
  • language-The word choices to interact readers to read.
  • real target audience-target audience 18 years old can also be read by someone who is 15.

2) Find at least five culture magazine front covers (either current or former magazines) aimed at a similar target audience to your project (adults interested in popular culture). For each one, pick out one design idea that you could use in your own print work. Some examples you may wish to look at include the Guardian Guide, Sunday Times Culture magazine, Time Out, The Face, the Radio Times, Aesthetica, the move and Paper:

From the guide I can adapt the way the language is presented it as it can be related to my target audience and my Genre.

From the culture magazine I can adapt the colour scheme  which is red and looks vibrant but has the denotations of blood can  fit very well with my TV drama.

From the time out London magazine i can adapt the way the central image is shot which is the  medium closeup shot to show the celebrity.

From the radio times magazine i can adapt the way cover lines are being shown around the central image to attract readers to read the magazine.

Image result for gangster magazine covers

From the one west magazine i can adapt the way the background and colour are black and the way dark colours can suggested by

3) Find at least three contents pages from culture, lifestyle or music magazines on Google images. How are contents pages designed? How do they use a combination of text and images to create an effective design?

Content pages are designed by having a central image in the middle and then the text in the side which can relate back to the topic which the magazine is about and the text is arranged in bullet points and number which go in a chronological order.

4) Find at least three double-page spread features from culture, lifestyle or music magazines on Google images. How are they designed? How are text and images displayed? What design tricks can you borrow from your examples?

Double page features have a image in one page and text on the other which relates to the image. This can help me in my double page by having the image in one page and the text on the other which can relate to the TV drama.

5) Read at least three example features from newspapers and magazine to learn the format, writing style and content for a culture magazine. You may wish to use the following to help you:

Planning, sketching and writing

1) Plan a title and slogan for your new, original culture magazine. Sketch out possible designs for the masthead - font, style, colour etc.

Title-Suave

Slogan-

2) Plan the content for your magazine front cover. Your double-page spread will be the main story but what other cover lines, images and more will you include on the cover?

I will have one central image in the front cover and use two cover lines in the front cover.

3) Write a list of the all the features, regular sections and more that will appear on your contents page. If you've chosen to produce a different internal page, plan that here instead.

I will include things such as interview cast, interview with the director and maybe competitions.

4) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of all the issues or topics your TV drama addresses. How can you use this information to create a main feature for your culture magazine about your TV drama that will appeal to your target audience?

The main feature can be about how knife crime is increasing in London and how dangerous it is for my target audience to be using knife.

5) Write the text for your double-page spread feature. This needs to be a minimum of 400 words and be completely original and feature an aspect of your TV drama. Make sure you include a headline, subheading and any pullout quotes or sidebar contents.

In the TV drama Trap stories, our message to the young teenager watching our show is that knife crime is something which needs to stop in the society as it is increasing every year. For example from 2016 to 2019,the knife crime has increased by 21% and the TV drama wants to promote that the crime life is not something which is good and they are showing by their narrative that it doesn't have good effect in your life. In the interview, When the director jaswinder was asked questions about the message he wants to give the audience the n he gave the reply by saying want to ensure that the young audience get the message from the that crime drama that this is not something which will help you in the future and will create a lot of problems for yourself in your relationships and also your physical health”. Furthermore In this show the narrative will show how the protagonist is getting into crime and getting peer pressured by other young people to get into crime. Additionally this will then show how young people get easily influenced into crime and do a lot of wrong things by getting into it.The TV drama will show a number of crimes like drugs trafficking, money laundering and fraud which will be shown in the drama and will also show the negative impacts it has on the society and young people. The director, Jaswinder shared with us how one of the scenes will be showing how drugs like balloons will impact the body and the reaction that one of the young kids have by having too many  of balloons. However this TV drama did get criticised by some media influence as they think this show is promoting violence and crime for young people and instead of helping this show is encouraging young people to get into crime.

6) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover including the key conventions and design tricks you have studied in existing magazines and then planned in planning task 1 above.

7) Produce an A4 sketch of your contents page. This can be a single page of A4 or alternatively a double-page spread (A3).

8) Produce an A4 landscape sketch of your double page spread design now you have chosen the subject matter.

Photoshoot

1) Which of your main characters will appear on the front cover of your magazine?

The false hero will be in the cover page.

2) What image or images do you need for the contents page?

I need about 5  pictures in my contents page.

3) What image or images will you use for the double-page spread? Remember, you need seven different original images across the print brief.

5 upcoming TV drama trailers pictures
1 picture with the front page
1 picture with the content page

4) Write a shot list for the photoshoot. Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.

two  Long shot of one off the main characters with the car in the background.
five  Medium shots for the 5 upcoming trailers.

5) What costumeprops or make-up will you require for the photoshoot?

Costume needs to be casual wear which can show it's related to teenagers.

preliminary learner response

1) Type up your teacher's feedback in full plus a summary of the comments you received from other students in the class.

www-use of pan,POV and range of shots

EBI-shot/reverse shot for dialogue and fade in music. throughout the scene

2) Using a combination of your own reflection on the preliminary exercise and the feedback you were given, write three WWW bullet points and three EBI bullet points for your TV drama scene.

WWW-

  • Range of shots
  • use of dialogue
  • music choice was great

EBI

  • I need to work on my editing skills for sound
  • reverse shot/180 degree rule
  • use different settings

3) How effectively did you complete the objective you laid out in your mini preliminary exercise statement of intent?

I completed this task effectively because I did exactly what was in the brief by having two characters and record a scene with them. However I do still need to work on how to record certain shots and use 180 degree rule for dialogues.

4) What have you learned from the preliminary exercise that will help you in the actual coursework project?

In this project I have learned that I need to use school camera for my shots and use of different locations in my shots in order to make my trailer look realistic.

5) Now you have completed the preliminary exercise, will you change anything in your actual TV drama trailer? This could include narrative, character and script or technical elements such as mise-en-scene, camerawork and sound.

I will change the way my sound is shown in tv drama because I don't want the song to fade out like my preliminary exercise.

Mise en scene

Coursework: Pre-production - Mise-en-scene

Create a Mise-en-scene blogpost planning everything that will appear in front of the camera in your two-minute film trailer.

Remember CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Actors (cast, placement and movement), Make-up, Props, Setting.

Costume

My characters will be wearing casual clothes like tracksuit, jeans and hoodies which is the normal way of how teenagers are meant to be scene. This costume can show the audience how young teenagers look like and how they are normally dressed.Additionally this will help me in representing the youth and my target audience watching this aged 16-25.This links with my statement of intent as this

Lighting

How will you light your trailer? Day or night? Interior or exterior? If outside, can you use streetlights, shadows, reflected sunlight or other creative techniques to achieve the lighting style you want? If inside, experiment with creative lighting techniques using windows, blinds, artificial lights, phone flashes and more.

In my coursework i will be using streetlights and low key lighting to show shadows which can also then relate to my genre of crime as most crimes take place at night.Additionally i might also use phone flashes or use a touch in the night to create suspense and mystery in my trailer.

Actors
The first thing you need to plan is your cast - who will be in your production and which characters will they play? Try and cast people who are reasonably similar to the character they are playing (both in age and personality). Next, plan their placement and movement in key scenes in your trailer. Do you want them to appear trapped in a claustrophobic close-up? Or isolated as a tiny person in a wide shot?

Make-up

The make up requirement will be the fake blood use and maybe i will use contact lenses which will be a different colour and will show that there has been an acid attack on one of the character's  eye to link with my genre of crime.

Props

I might be using A fake gun, baseball bat and balaclavas in my trailer which will help me in my establishing my start for my trailer and will also be able to show my genre properly which is of crime and gangster.

Locations

The exact locations of my scenes will be a corner shop in west ealing, estate area in Northolt, central London and hayes car park.
